Jorge Jesus took over Benfica on 17 June 2009, replacing Quique Flores. In the 2009–10 season, he won the first division title after a five-year wait with only two league defeats and 78 goals scored, plus the domestic League Cup. Over six seasons, he secured ten trophies—a club record for a single manager—winning all domestic trophies at least once. He reached two UEFA Europa League finals (2013 against Chelsea and 2014 against Sevilla), losing both. Domestically, he led Benfica to back-to-back league titles in 2014 and 2015, the first time since 1984. He won five Taça da Liga titles and two Supertaças Cândido de Oliveira. His tenure included setting records for most victories (195), most league matches managed, and 16 consecutive wins across all competitions.

In September, Jesus became physically involved with police attempting to clear supporters from the pitch at a match against Guimarães, receiving a 30-day suspension. He surpassed John Mortimore's record of minutes without conceding a goal at home in March 2014. On 18 May 2014, he became the first Portuguese coach to win the domestic treble with Benfica. By August 2014, he had become the coach with the most matches (273) and tied Cosme Damião for most trophies won before surpassing him.

On 20 April 2014, Jesus led Benfica to their 33rd title. Four days earlier, the team beat Porto 3–1 despite being reduced to ten men an hour from full time. In the Europa League that season, they defeated Juventus 2–1 on aggregate after a goalless draw in Turin. On 7 May 2014, he won his fourth Taça da Liga against Rio Ave at Leiria.
